Girl Rising – Woh Padhegi Woh Udegi is a special film initiative from Star Plus to empower each and every girl with education this Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi). Rakhi has been chosen as the day to focus on girl empowerment, and we all need to provide the positive impetus to her by means of education which will strengthen and support her for the entire lifetime.
Film and TV actors have lend their support to the film and initiative: Madhuri Dixit, Nandita Das, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sushmita Sen from Hindi film industry, and Pearl V. Puri (Abeer from Badtameez Dil) and Divyanka Tripathi (Ishita from Yeh Hai Mohabbatein) from the TV industry. Girl Rising is a global movement for girls’ education, based primarily around a 2013 feature film, Girl Rising. The movie Girl Rising was directed by Academy Award nominee Richard E. Robbins and features narration by Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Selena Gomez, Liam Neeson, Priyanka Chopra, Chloë Grace Moretz, Freida Pinto, Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, Alicia Keys and Kerry Washington.
The movie tells the stories of nine girls from nine countries: (Sierra Leone, Haiti, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Peru, Egypt, Nepal, India and Cambodia). Each girl had her story written by a writer from her country and voiced by renowned actors, and their stories reflect their struggles to overcome societal or cultural barriers.
