The opening confrontation between Kanta and Sita highlights the social pressure faced by women who refuse to return to abusive marriages. Kanta’s insistence that Sita must preserve her marriage, even after everything she has suffered, is frustrating. Ganga’s decision to send Sita with her mother is surprising, especially after standing firmly by her earlier.
