Dosa Sparks Debate Online: Is Eating It With a Fork and Spoon Really Wrong? Man Eats Dosa with Fork and Spoon at Upscale Hotel, Draws Mixed Reactions

A simple dosa has sparked an unexpected debate on social media after a video showed a man eating the popular South Indian dish with a fork and spoon at a five-star hotel.

The discussion began after businessman and social media user Manas Muduli shared the video with a humorous caption suggesting that when a dosa costs around ₹1,500 at a luxury hotel, guests apparently have to follow a different set of rules. The video, shared by an etiquette coaching account, shows a man using cutlery to eat the dosa, prompting the playful remark that “fork and spoon are compulsory” at such establishments.

The post quickly caught the attention of social media users, with many debating whether using cutlery to eat dosa is proper etiquette or simply unnecessary sophistication.

The conversation became even more interesting when businessman Harsh Goenka joined the discussion. He revealed that people often make fun of him for eating dosa with a fork and knife and jokingly admitted that he might have to change his habit after seeing the reactions online.

For many Indians, eating dosa with the hands is part of the experience. The dish is traditionally enjoyed by tearing off a piece, picking it up with the fingers and combining it with chutney or sambar. Some social media users argued that eating with hands allows people to enjoy the texture and flavors of the dish better.

Others, however, pointed out that eating with cutlery is perfectly acceptable, particularly in an upscale restaurant where formal dining etiquette may be expected. The debate also raised questions about whether luxury restaurants sometimes create unnecessary rules around traditional Indian food.

One social media user highlighted the irony of expensive restaurants encouraging customers to use utensils for food that is traditionally eaten by hand, especially when washing hands before and after a meal is hardly difficult.

The debate has therefore become less about the dosa itself and more about personal choice, restaurant etiquette and the changing way Indians experience traditional food in modern settings.

What do you think? Should dosa always be eaten with hands, or is using a fork and spoon perfectly fine at a luxury restaurant?
