Anupama Review: The Show That Refuses to Let Its Lead Breathe. Star Plus’s long-running drama Anupama has once again found itself in the firing line—not from its characters, but from its viewers. Loyal fans, once invested in the show’s empowering premise, are now questioning if there’s any real progression left in the storyline, or if Anupama is destined to remain the poster woman for martyrdom, forever stuck in a loop of sacrifice, tears, and neglect.
The “Empowerment” Illusion
One comment that resonated deeply among the audience pointed out the writers’ skewed definition of strength. Is enduring humiliation after humiliation, tolerating daily disrespect, and still standing upright truly empowerment? Or is it just glorified suffering wrapped in the label of resilience? Many fans feel the show missed the bus on showing true female empowerment—where the lead finally chooses herself and builds a life of dignity, purpose, and peace without the emotional baggage of the Shahs.
A viewer noted that if Samar hadn’t been abruptly killed off, maybe the storyline wouldn’t have spiraled so hopelessly backward. Characters disappear not because their arcs are complete, but because they’re no longer toxic enough to feed into the high-voltage drama recipe. The show once revealed Anupama had a biological mother and a brother, but they were brushed aside in favor of continuing the regressive saas-bahu dynamics in the Shah household—convenient, yet frustrating.
Missed Opportunities & Lazy Writing
There’s a growing sentiment that the show had countless opportunities to tackle complex, real-life issues—like parental favoritism, the psychological cost of being the “giver” in every relationship, or the unfair expectations placed on mothers of multiple children. Yet the writers chose to sideline depth for drama.
One fan recalled a moment from Rahi’s past when she, then called Choti, was involved in bullying a classmate. Anupama, true to her values, tried to correct her. But instead of turning this into a moment of growth and reflection, the narrative swerved awkwardly. The takeaway wasn’t “learn from your mistake,” but “Anupama is too harsh.” Meanwhile, Pakhi’s frequent blunders were met with far less accountability. This inconsistency, many feel, molded Rahi into her current flawed self—and again, the abuse from the Shah family didn’t help either.
Why Is Anupama Still Crying?
A biting yet brutally honest fan reflection compared Anupama to other shows with older female leads—where they start businesses in their 50s, own supermarkets by their 80s, and live fiercely independent lives. Anupama, despite all her talent and drive, is still portrayed as a woman running from one emotional breakdown to another, torn between abusive in-laws and ungrateful children.
Some viewers are practically begging the show to flip the narrative—show her walking away, building a thriving business, becoming a name in the culinary or dance world. Let the Shahs and their tantrums rot in their own chaos. Let Rahi, Mahi, and Pakhi realize what they lost. That, fans argue, would be the real empowerment story.
Rinse, Repeat, and TRP
As the current track rolls on—almost identical to the June 9th update, with only minor tweaks—viewers are growing weary. A sarcastic remark captured the general exhaustion. The sarcasm barely hides the desperation for change, or at the very least, progress.
Because right now, the show isn’t moving forward. It’s jogging on a treadmill of emotional manipulation, with Anupama—still weighed down by guilt, expectations, and tears—running to nowhere.
Dear writers, give her a new script. She’s earned it.
